So this week I've been reading Allie's blog and have noted some of her firsts for the year, and this inspired my blog for this week... my ultimate first. Which I'm sure is going to beat out all your firsts, Allie!! Hee, hee!
This week, I had my FIRST round of mini golf.... played in a library. Yes, that's right folks, you read right... a library. The University of Nebraska College of Law library, to be exact. Don't worry, don't worry, this was all completely legal, as it was the librarians who supervised the event and handed out the clubs. I'm not really sure WHY we were playing golf in the library, I have a theory though. I think what happened was the librarians finally cracked and went bonkers. Rumor has it that several library supervisors taken away late last Friday afternoon, put in straight jackets and sent to insane asylums. The crime? I'm not sure, possibly one of them got caught up in a law suit on tax fraud in North Dakota. Why do I think this? Well, they used the North Dakota tax law books to set up holes 7 and8. No worries, though, first year law has taught us that they will probably not be held liable for the tort of battery on account of insanity. Rumor also has it that they are filing their own counter-claim of negligence on the part of the law college for not providing better health care. What does this have to do with why there was a golf course set up in the library? I don't know! But whatever the reason, the point is, is that the event was completely supervised by competent (though possibly insane) individuals!
The highlight of this "first" for me came on hole 9. After making our way through the first floor holes and up hole 6 (the elevator) onto the 2nd floor, through the North Dakota tax law holes, we finally found ourselves at hole 9. Hole 9 was a very special hole in that we had to hit the golf ball down 43.5 steps that lead to the 1st floor, across the library lobby and into one of 4 holes. After clearly telling people on the first floor to watch out (I do believe my exact words were "Fire in the hole"... clearly audible, as I yelled it... another first for a library) I hit the ball as hard as I could down the stairs. Why did I hit it as hard as I could? Well, for one reason, I had been told the the balls didn't go as far as you thought they would go, so when hitting it down the stairs you needed to hit it extra hard. Also, when do you ever get to hit a golf ball down the stairs in a law library?! Exactly-I wanted to make the most of it.
Apparently I hit the ball possibly a little too hard.... The ball hit the landing in the middle of the stairs with a sickening crack and bounced cock-eyed over the railing and straight towards the reference desk. After narroly avoiding the reference dude, the ball hit the reference desk and flew crazily acros the room towards the printing table, where an unsuspecting old man was reading the newspaper. Hitting the desk right next to the old man, the ball continued it's course across the library, stopping somwhere around hole 2. Of course, I only saw half of this, as I was still at the top of the stiars laughing hystericaly at the look of fear in the reference desk employee's eyes! But other sources recounted the experience from the ground level and have confirmed these facts.
Moral of the story: watch out for flying objects in the library.
